Dr. Andy Fine’s Update on Covid-19

CPHC Team • Sep 15, 2021

\ Our very own, Dr. Andy Fine sat down to give us an update on Covid, the new Delta variant, and how to handle life during this time based on the current data provided. To find out what Dr.Fine has to say about the initial vaccines, getting the booster vaccine, and what we know about the risks of Covid for kids, keep reading below!

I am going to talk about an update on Covid as of 09/07/2021. All information may be subject to re-evaluation one day from now, one month from now, or even one year from now. But, I wanted to give everyone an update as of now on what we know and what we do not know, and how to handle life.

The Booster Vaccine
The first thing is boosters, okay, there is not enough evidence yet to support a third shot or a booster shot, unless people have had transplants and are on any immunosuppressant drugs. If they are on immunosuppressant drugs for any other reason there is not enough evidence to support the need for the third shot. All of these shots come with risks and if there is not enough evidence that you need it, I am not going to get the third one yet and I do not think anyone else should either. That may change in two or three weeks with more data but as of now, no need for a booster shot for the covid vaccine.

Covid Vaccine
Regarding the vaccine, we are still recommending that the data still strongly outweighs the getting vaccine versus not getting the vaccine. Your chance of getting in a car any day and getting in a car wreck and dying is just as high as you have an advanced covid vaccine reaction. That is how rare it is, they happen but are literally one in a million. There is certainly more than one fatal crash in a population of one million people going out every day. So the chance of you getting in a car wreck and dying in that car wreck is higher than you have a bad reaction, short-term and long-term to the vaccine.

Kid and Covid
Let’s talk about kids and covid. The vaccine for children under 12 is being studied from 2 months to 12 years old, hopefully, those will get released later this month and be cleared to go forward. They are doing half doses and we know it’s effective but do not know if it is safe. That is why they want to test it longer. Even if you are immune and vaccinated you can still get covid asymptomatically, be a carrier, you\’re just as likely to be a carrier as anybody else who is unvaccinated and pass it on to your under 12 unvaccinated children.  Then, it is very unlikely to get sick from covid, or let alone severely ill, hospitalized, or even die. But it is still happening. Kids are getting complications and being hospitalized. Last I checked there were ten thousand kids in the United Stated alone hospitalized in a given day for covid related stuff. They are not dying but they are becoming critically ill and becoming intensive care patients. They do not want to get it, the chances of them getting it are really low and the chances of them dying is also really low.
