This week, we are going to continue our recent discussion with Dr. Andy Fine on our health and the nutrition correlation.
Patients are getting diagnosed more frequently due to the newer lower target numbers for blood pressure, blood sugar or blood cholesterol. Physicians are then recommending treatments for these. Doctors are becoming well attuned to trying to use lifestyle changes and medications to deal with some of these nutritional things.
Really for no matter what your problem is – whether you have current bad problems like irritable bowel or chronic bloating and gas, diabetes, high blood pressure or high cholesterol the same diet would apply. That would be a diet low in things that cause inflammation. Remember last week, anything that you get in the middle of a grocery store – packaged, frozen, canned items are filled with lots of preservatives and carbohydrates. Keep to the perimeter of the store. The lower you lower your burden of inflammatory foods the healthier you will be!
• Today, having a fasting blood sugar level between 100 and 125 is borderline of pre-diabetic.
• Approximately 120 million or about a 1/3 of the country is either pre-diabetic or diabetic.
Dr. Fine recommends getting checked out again soon. Even if you have been checked in the past and you were told you were all ok… that may not be anymore. New research clearly suggests that even mildly elevated levels of blood sugar, blood pressure or blood cholesterol will clog arteries and lead to early heart disease, strokes and even cognitive problems. Some memory loss and it\’s not necessarily dementia but nobody wants to be losing their memory in their 50’s and 60’s because they didn’t take care of mildly elevated blood sugar in their 40’s or even 30’s.
We are getting a lot more aggressive despite people\’s sometimes hesitancy to be on medication. The goal is to do medication when appropriate and especially when the evidence suggests that it\’s helpful. Benefits of medication even for low levels of abnormalities of high cholesterol, sugar or blood pressure suggests that the benefits far out way risks.
Next week, we will continue on this healthy journey together so I hope you\’ll join us!
