Home First Aid Kit Essentials

Having a first aid kit in your home and in your car can be a life-saver. Here’s what you need to have a fully stocked kit that can help you in many emergency situations.

Basic Wound Care

You want to make sure you’re prepared to handle the most common emergencies, such as cuts, bruises, and scrapes. Here are some of the wound care supplies you should include:

  • Adhesive tape and duct tape

  • Antibiotic ointment and antiseptic solution or towelettes

  • Bandages. The Red Cross recommends:

    • Absorbent compress dressings (5”X9”)

    • Adhesive bandages (assorted sizes)

    • Roller bandages (3” and 4” wide)

    • Sterile gauze pads (both 3”X3” and 4”X4”)

    • Triangular bandages

  • Instant cold compress

  • Sterile eyewash

These supplies should allow you to handle many basic injuries.

Medications

In addition to basic wound care, some medications can be very helpful in an emergency. Your first-aid kit should include:

  • Activated charcoal

  • Anti-diarrhea medication

  • Oral antihistamines

  • Aspirin and non-aspirin pain relievers

  • Hydrocortisone cream and skin lotion

  • Personal medications that don’t need to be refrigerated

  • Anti-allergy medications is someone in your family is subject to dangerous attacks

  • Measuring device for liquid medications

All these medications should be regularly checked to make sure they are not expired.

Emergency Equipment

Other items in your first-aid kit should help you in the event of an emergency, such as:

  • First aid manual

  • Scissors

  • Safety pins

  • Non-mercury thermometer

  • Bulb suction device for rinsing wounds

  • Space blanket

  • Breathing barrier

  • Flashlight

Make sure to check the batteries on the thermometer and flashlight when you’re refreshing medications.

Of course, these are generalized suggestions desired to cover all situations. If you want a primary care doctor in Littleton to talk to about how best to make a first aid kit for your family, please contact Dr. Andy Fine today.
